Hi everyone,
I got a shout out today in today's entry of musician
Robert Fripp's diary. Check it out:
RF's Diary 11/3
I am mentioned down near the bottom of the entry so
scroll down. He even linked back to my website!
So why am I getting a shout out?
About a year ago I completed a cartoon featuring Mr.
Fripp, and on a whim, I decided to send him a copy of
it. I wasn't expecting anything, but about 2 weeks
later, I received an email from him stating how much
he enjoyed it and that he would like to acquire the
original art for his collection. So I sent it to him
and that was that. Or so I thought. 3 weeks ago I
unexpectedly received another email from Robert
stating he was going to add me to his "personal guest
list" for his performance on 11/3 at the Egg!
I went, of course, not expecting much else, though
most people I told seemed to think I would be invited
back stage. I certainly didn't want to get my hopes
up, but afterward, as i waited for the elevator to
bring me back down to the lobby, I decided to talk to
the two guys running the merchandising table. I simply
wondered if they might relay a message to Robert
thanking him for the ticket. They asked my name and
when i told them, their jaws dropped. "You're Doug
Arthur?" Their reaction took me by surprise. After
all, who was I? "You are the guy who did the cartoon!"
' You have permission to see Robert." So off one of
them went, and he returned in just a minute. "Follow
me", and away we went, up the stairs and down a long
hallway. I was lead to the dressing room where the
door was open. He was there and chatting with a few
other folks, who were obviously old friends. He looked
at me quizzically for a moment and I said, " Hi, my
name is Doug Arthur and I was told it was okay to meet
you." "Doug Arthur!" a huge smile spread across his
face, "From The Dougside!", as he strode toward me
arms outstretched to give me a hearty handshake. He
introduced me to his friends, with quite a bit of
animation in his voice, "This is Doug Arthur! He drew
that wonderful cartoon of me! He works at the Apple
Store!" How he remembered that about me, I don't know,
but he turned the whole conversation into one about
me. It made me relax a bit, but I have to say I was
nervous as heck, not having met anyone of his stature
before (Weird Al Yankovic doesn't count, though that
was cool too)(for those of you who may not know who
Robert Fripp is, I am sure you have heard his work
before since he has played with David Bowie, Peter
Gabriel, Talking Heads and his own band King Crimson)
He offered me a bottle of water, which was much
appreciated on my end since my mouth had instanly
turned into a desert talking to him. I honestly don't
remember much else that we talked about, I was too
excited, and just hope that I didn't make a fool of
myself. After a few minutes, I just didn't want to
over-stay my welcome. We shook hands a few more times,
and he told me to stay in touch, so I guess I
comported myself well! He was very nice and seemed to
really be interested in me and what I had to say. And
that is how I met one of my biggest idols. Funny, how
I wound up feeling like the main attraction. It was a
bit surreal, but quite a lift after a long week at
work.
I guess I have to update my website now...its only
been 7 years since the last time... :) I had over 100
hits today from people linking in from the diary
entry.
talk to you all soon!
